Gas leaks – What are gas leaks?
Gas leaks occur when your pipework becomes compromised and cannot tightly secure natural gas or LPG within its confines. In Melbourne, we predominantly use natural gas for ducted/space heating, cooking, and hot water services. When a leak occurs, it can pose serious risks, and it is advised that your licensed plumber attend to this immediately.
What causes it?
Corrosion
Corrosion is a common issue with aging pipelines where galvanised or steel pipes have been used. It generally presents itself when water comes into contact with iron and oxygen; rust develops due to a chemical reaction between these elements.
Burst Pipe
Damage to pipelines caused by corrosion, excavation work, or natural disasters can lead to leaks.
Pipeline failure. Leaking valves, appliances, fixtures, gas fittings, or other necessary associated parts within the gas line can cause leaks.
Installation error
Poorly installed gas appliances, such as stoves, hot water services, or gas heaters, can develop leaks.
Natural Causes
Earthquakes can disturb pipework joints and create leaks. Extreme weather conditions, depending on the material used and location, can also affect pipework.
Are gas leaks harmful to us and the environment?
To be put very simply, yes, they are very harmful and can be fatal.

Explosion and fire
Natural gas and LPG are highly flammable when combined with the right amount of gas and oxygen. A small spark can ignite the substance, creating a fire or explosion.
Asphyxiation
Gas leaks in confined spaces without a good flow of ventilation can displace oxygen, leading to asphyxiation.
Health Risks
Exposure to natural gas or LPG can cause symptoms such as headaches, lightheadedness, sickness, and breathing issues. When exposed to natural gas or LPG for long durations, it can become fatal.
Environmental Impact
Methane is the primary component of natural gas and a strong greenhouse gas. When emitted into the atmosphere, greenhouse gases contribute to climate change.
Is this fixable?
Everything in life is fixable, but it depends on what is worthwhile fixing compared to replacing. Every situation is dissimilar, and everyone’s financial position may be different, so the outcomes can vary. However, leaks can be fixed if they are accessible.
The extent of the leak in the pipework or appliances will determine the fix. A new gas line can be installed and reconnected to the existing appliances.
A pressure test is always conducted after work is completed to ensure your safety and that of your family. When you engage Heritage Plumbing Group, there are zero tolerances for gas leaks.
Can I fix a gas leak myself?
Given the harmful nature of natural gas and LPG, we suggest hiring a licensed plumber to evaluate the issue and complete the necessary tests/repairs. Conducting repairs on a gas line is illegal as it is a licensed trade. You will also likely not have the equipment or methods to conduct pressure tests.
Costing?
It would be cheaper to repair the existing infrastructure if it is readily accessible. This will save money on materials, etc. However, you always need to consider that if the pipework or appliances are old and starting to present problems, then more issues can be incurred in the near future.
Although more expensive, replacing the pipework is more favoured as it gives you peace of mind that you don’t have to worry and can be satisfied that you and your family are safe.
