What is it?

Corrosion in galvanised pipes is caused by moisture, which can lead to leaks or burst pipes.

What causes it?

Corrosion is a common issue that arises with aging pipelines. When water comes into contact with iron and oxygen, rust develops due to a chemical reaction between these elements.

Galvanised pipes are commonly used in older buildings, and they may seem to be in good condition from the outside—however, these types of pipes rust from the inside out. Unfortunately, you may not be aware of any problems with your pipes until a leak has already occurred. An accumulation of rust inside the pipes can obstruct water flow, resulting in increased water pressure in the pipes and eventually causing a burst pipe.

Is it harmful?

Corrosion of galvanised pipes in older homes with outdated plumbing can pose a significant health risk. If your pipes have corroded, rust may enter your drinking water, which could be harmful to your health. Therefore, it is crucial to have a plumber inspect your pipes and determine whether replacement is necessary.

Is this fixable?

It depends on the extent of rust that has formed on the pipes, whether it is inside or outside. Band-aid fixes usually won’t work if rust has accumulated on older pipes. If the damage is minor, there are a few ways to prevent rust from spreading to inside your household ie. Filtration systems. However, if the pipe is connected to drinking water or food preparation at a commercial premises, it’s best to replace the pipes.

How do you remove rust from plumbing pipes?

There is no way to remove rust from the inside of pipes. We suggest hiring a professional plumber to evaluate the issue and complete the necessary replacement or filtration system.

Do rusty pipes need to be replaced?

In my opinion I would always prefer to see rusted pipes to be replaced. Rusted pipes will only ever get worse and never get better. Drinking rusted water can affect you and your family’s health.

Rust prevention

There is no way to prevent rust from continuing to form. Once rust has started it will generally keep getting worse. The best thing to do is to continuously assess your pipes to see if the rust is affecting your water supply. You can assess this by using a clear glass and filling it up a different location. Once the glass has been filled you can review the colour or check for particles. Another suggestion would be to have two of the same clear glasses, one filled with bottle water and the other filled with tap water. The difference may surprise you and help with your decision whether to replace the pipework or to install a filter.
